The 14 hopefuls all meet up in New York and are given their first assignment: Innovation. Taken to a place where they are to get their materials, the designers are shocked to see it is a grocery store. They have a budget of $50, one hour to make their purchases, and one day to complete their designs.

Another day begins, and the designers are to design a dress that represents 'Envy'. They have a budget of $50 and one day to complete the design. As they finish, the designers are surprised to be told that their dresses will be put for sale in a private auction, with whomever gets the most bids winning the challenge.
3. Commercial Appeal(41 min)

The designers can finally design something actually wearable. For this challenge, the designers must create a party dress that could appeal to Banana Republic's customers. The winner, instead of being granted immunity, will have their dress marketed and sold at select Banana Republic stores. They have to pick their fabrics at the studios and have two days to complete their designs.
4. Collaboration(43 min)

The designers show their prospective designs to rock singer Sarah Hudson, who picks the three whose designs she liked best: Jay, Kevin, and Austin. Those three are the team leaders and they have to pick two others to be on their team and, as a group, they will work on the group leader's design. Each team had $150 and one day to complete their design.
5. "Model" Clients(43 min)

The designers learn that their selected model will be their client, and they must design a wedding dress of their model's dreams. They have a budget of $300 and two days to complete the design.
6. Making a Splash(43 min)

The designers create swimsuits that are functional enough to swim in the pool, yet sophisticated enough to wear to an event. They then attend a fashion-industry party with their swimsuit-clad models. The winner will be the designer who receives a mention in the New York Post gossip column "Page Six." The designers have a budget of $75 and 5 hours to complete the design.
7. Design a Collection(43 min)

As one group, the designers will create a collection, one carrying the theme "the year 2055." One designer is to lead, taking responsibility for the overall vision, while each designer will sketch and create an outfit of his or her own for the line. Each designer has a budget of $50 and one day to complete their look for the collection.

9. Design for the Red Carpet(43 min)

This week's challenge is to design a dress for the host of Access Hollywood, Nancy O'Dell. Nancy will help judge the runway and wear the winning design on the red carpet at the 2005 Grammy Awards. The designers have $300 and two days to complete the design.

A special reunion episode, the 12 designers all reunite to talk about what happened behind the scenes on Project Runway. When people are confronted and questions are answered, the fabric starts flying.

Tim Gunn visits the final three designers at their homes to show the progress of their collections. Each designer must create a twelve piece collection for a showing at New York Olympus Fashion Week. After months at home to prepare, the final moment has come to show the world their collections.

After auditions in New York, Houston, Miami, and Los Angeles, the 16 contestants being considered for this season's cast were given six yards of plain white muslin, $20, and one week to create an outfit that best represents who they are as a fashion designer. After arriving, the 16 contestants find that only 14 positions were available in the Parsons workroom and thus two will be eliminated at the runway judging.
2. Clothes Off Your Back(46 min)

Heidi throws a roof-top party for the designers. At the party, she announces their next challenge: each must create an outfit using nothing besides the clothes he or she has worn to the party. They have one day to complete their designs.

The contestants are asked to design for a global star… Barbie. The winning designer's outfit will be duplicated for the My Scene Barbie collection. The designers have a budget of $150 and two days to complete their designs.
4. Team Lingerie(47 min)

The remaining designers must design a lingerie line consisting of three looks. The twist is they have to do it as teams, each with a lead designer and two assistants. The designers have a budget of $200 and one day to complete their collections.

The remaining designers must each create a dress for prominent socialite Nicky Hilton. The designers have a budget of $150 and two days to complete the designs.

The designers, in five teams of two, must create a day-to-evening ensemble for Banana Republic, as well as a compelling and successful window display advertising the clothing. Each team has to finish their garment in one day.
7. On Thin Ice(47 min)

The designers have to get sporty to create a garment for 2006 Olympic silver medalist Sasha Cohen. The designers have a budget of $150 and two days to complete the design.
8. Inspiration(46 min)

The contestants have to draw inspiration from their surroundings while outside in New York. The designers have a budget of $100 and one day to complete the outfit.
9. Flower Power(45 min)

Designers must create a look using only natural materials purchased in the flower district. The designers have a budget of $100 and one day to create the garment.
10. Makeover(45 min)

The designers must design a makeover look for another designer, who will then model the new look on the runway. The designers have a budget of $200 and two days to complete the outfit.
11. What's Your Line(46 min)

The contestants face off in the final competition before the Olympus Fashion Week finale. They must design an evening gown that will be worn by supermodel Iman. The designers have a budget of $300 and two days to complete the outfit.

The designers are informed that they'll be creating an evening outfit based on a story inspired by a tiny dog. The designers must also design outfits for the dogs to wear. They have $150 and two days to complete their looks.
4. Reap What You Sew(48 min)

The designers, in teams of three, are asked to design a three-piece look that embraces the INC (International Concepts) brand. The winning design will be manufactured, produced, and sold at Macy's stores. The teams have $100 and two days to complete the challenge.
5. Iconic Statement(48 min)

The designers face the challenge of modernizing a look for a famous "fashion icon:" Cher, Farrah Fawcett, Pam Grier, Audrey Hepburn, Katharine Hepburn, Madonna, Marilyn Monroe, Jackie Onassis, Diana Ross, or Twiggy. They have $150 and two days to complete their designs.
6. Waste Not, Want Not(49 min)

At the Waste Management Recycle America Center, each designer is given 30 minutes to fill as many bins as they desire with recyclable materials. They must create an outfit from these materials, in one day, with an additional $25 for art supplies.
7. Everyday Woman(51 min)

The designers are asked to create an outfit for an "everyday woman" …each other's mothers and sisters. They have $150 and one day to complete the challenge.
8. High Flying Fashion(48 min)
Aired: 30-08-2006
The designers are tasked to create an "international jet-set" outfit. They will then be flown to Paris to model the wearability of the garments. They have $75 and one day to complete the look.
9. Couture Du Jour(49 min)

While in Paris, the designers' next challenge is to make a gown employing haute couture techniques. They have 300€ and two days to complete the challenge.
10. Black and White(48 min)
Aired: 13-09-2006
Eliminated designers who have won at least one previous challenge are given a chance to get back into the competition. The designers are asked to create a cocktail dress using only black and white fabrics. They have $100 and one day to complete their design, with the stipulation that they must use all of their purchased fabric.
11. What the Elle?(49 min)

The designers are asked to create an outfit that expresses "their specific point of view." They must also stage a photo-shoot with their models and find three words that best express who they are as designers. They have $250 and two days to complete the challenge.
12. Reunion(50 min)

The cast of Season 3 reunites to recap all the gripes, drama and other shenanigans which were only seen by those behind the scenes. One of the designers wins the first ever "Fan Favorite" award, along with a check for $10,000.

Season 4 (November 2007 - March 2008)
1. Sew Me What You Got(49 min)

In the fourth-season opener, the new crop of designers invades New York City. It's pins-and-needles time when the first challenge finds the newbies racing to design whatever they want. They are given 10 minutes to grab from $50,000 worth of fabric in three tents set up in Bryant Park to create a garment that best reflects who they are as a designer.
2. I Started Crying(47 min)

The designers are asked to create a two-piece garment for Sarah Jessica Parker's "Bitten" line. After pitching their designs, Parker chooses seven who will be team leaders, working in teams of two to create the design. They have $15 and one day to complete their look.
3. Fashion Giant(44 min)

The designers are asked to create a menswear outfit for Tiki Barber to wear on The Today Show. They have $150 and two days to complete their looks.
4. Trendsetter(44 min)
Aired: 05-12-2007
Each designer must pick one of 12 outdated fashion trends. Then, working in teams of three, they must incorporate all three trends into a cohesive mini-collection of three looks. They have $225 and two days to complete their outfits.
5. What's the Skinny?(47 min)
Aired: 12-12-2007
Each designer must create an outfit for a woman who has recently lost weight. The new outfit must incorporate aspects of the now-thin woman's personality, as well as the designer's own style. They are given one of the woman's outfits from before her weight loss as raw material for the new design, $10 to use for additional materials, and one day to complete the challenge.
6. Eye Candy(44 min)

Designers are asked to create a garment using any materials available at the Hershey's store in Times Square. They have only five minutes to collect materials and one day to complete the outfit.
7. What a Girl Wants(47 min)

The designers are challenged to create prom dresses for a group of 16 and 17 year old girls. They have $250 and two days to finish the garments.
8. En Garde!(47 min)
Aired: 16-01-2008
After designers are randomly paired the teams are asked to create an avant-garde outfit based on inspiration from their models' hairstyles. They have $300 and two days to create this look. Later, each team is asked to create a ready-to-wear outfit which embodies the essence of their avant-garde look. For the second piece, the designers have an additional $50.
9. Even Designers Get the Blues(47 min)

The designers are tasked with creating an iconic look using deconstructed denim while also showing off the Levi's 501 legacy. They are given three minutes to collect provided denim (jeans, jackets, and cotton fabric) and one day to complete their designs.
10. Raw Talent(44 min)

The designers must design an outfit for a WWE Diva that matches her attitude and can be worn in the wrestling ring. They have $100 and two days to complete the looks.
11. The Art of Fashion(44 min)

Given 45 minutes in three galleries at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the designers must select a piece to use as inspiration for an outfit. They have $300 and two days to complete their designs.
12. Reunion(44 min)

All the Season 4 designers reunite to dish on what really happened during the season. One designer is given $10,000 as the "Fan Favorite" contest winner.
13. Finale: Part 1(44 min)

The designers are asked to create a cocktail dress, using environmentally friendly or conscious fabrics, with their models as their clients. They have $75 and one day to finish their garments.
3. Bright Lights/Big City(44 min)

The designers are tasked to create a look inspired by the nightlife of New York City. They have $100 and one day to complete their designs.
4. Rings of Glory(44 min)

The designers must create a women's wear look for the 2008 Summer Olympics Opening Ceremonies. They have $150 and one day to complete their designs.
5. Welcome to the Jungle(44 min)
Aired: 13-08-2008
Brooke Shields gives the designers their next challenge, to make an outfit she will wear on her television show Lipstick Jungle. They pitch their ideas to Shields, who chooses half of them as team leaders to be paired randomly with the remaining contestants. The designers have $150 and one day to complete their looks.
6. Good Queen Fun(48 min)

Former contestant Chris March returns to give the designers their next challenge: make an outfit for a drag queen. They have $200 and two days to complete their designs.
7. Fashion That Drives You(44 min)

The designers are asked to make an outfit from the spare parts and raw materials of a Saturn hybrid car. They have four minutes to collect their materials and one day to complete their outfits.
8. Double 0 Fashion(44 min)

The designers are taken to the offices and design showroom of fashion living-legend Diane von Fürstenberg. Their challenge is to create a look for her Fall 2008 collection, inspired by the movie A Foreign Affair. They have 15 minutes inside von Fürstenberg's sample room to select fabrics and one day to complete the outfit.
9. What's Your Sign?(49 min)

The designers are paired up with eliminated contestants and asked to create an avant-garde garment inspired by one of their two astrological signs. They have $250 and one day to complete the look.

The designers are assigned recent college graduates and are tasked to give them a fashion makeover to help them enter the workforce. Each designer was to gear their look to their client's specific profession, while keeping their individual style. They have $100 and two days to complete their look.
11. Rock N' Runway(44 min)

The contestants are given the task of designing for each other, inspired by different genres of music. They have $150 and one day to complete the challenge.

16 new contestants arrive in Los Angeles to begin the competition. The designers must create a red carpet look showing innovation and point of view. They have $200 and two days to complete their designs.

The designers are asked to create something fashionable and easy to move in, but also appropriate for a pregnant woman to wear out in public, for supermodel Rebecca Romijn. They have $100 and two days to complete the look.
3. Rumble On the Runway(43 min)
Aired: 03-09-2009
The designers are divided into teams of two and asked to create a fun and fashionable look inspired by Californian surfwear. The have $50 and two days to complete their looks. Later, the designers are given the additional challenge of creating an avant-garde companion piece to their surfwear outfit. They receive an additional $200 for the second look.
4. What a Woman Wants(43 min)

The designers must create an eye-catching look to be worn at a fashion industry event by their model/clients. They have $100 and one day to make it work.
5. Fashion Headliners(43 min)

The contestant are asked to use Los Angeles Times newspapers as fabric to create their looks. They have three minutes to grab materials and one day to complete the challenge.
6. Lights, Camera, Sew!(43 min)
Aired: 24-09-2009
The designers have to create an outfit inspired by film genres (Film Noir, Western, Period, Science Fiction, and Action/Adventure). They have $150 and one day to complete their designs.
7. The Sky Is the Limit(43 min)
Aired: 01-10-2009
The designers, working in pairs, have to create two looks for Macy's INC International Concepts brand using blue fabrics. They have $100 and one day to complete their looks.
8. A Fashionable New Beginning(43 min)
Aired: 08-10-2009
The designers have to repurpose wedding gowns of newly divorced women into fashionable new looks. They have $25 for a maximum of two yards of additional fabric and one day to complete the challenge.
9. Sequins, Feathers and Fur, Oh My!(43 min)
Aired: 15-10-2009
The designers have to create an extravagant stage look for Christina Aguilera, which should catch the attention of the audience from far away and also look chic on video from very close. They have $300 and two days to complete their designs.
10. Around the World in Two Days(43 min)
Aired: 22-10-2009
The designers must create a look inspired by seven locales around the world (Palm Beach, Greece, Saint-Tropez, New York City, Aspen, Santa Fe, and Hollywood). They have $150 and one day to complete the challenge.
11. The Best Of the Best(43 min)

The designers are asked to create a companion piece for one of their looks from a previous challenge. They have $100 and one day to complete their outfits.
12. The Art Of Fashion(43 min)

For the final challenge before Fashion Week, the designers go to Los Angeles's famed Getty Center, where they are to draw inspiration from any location in and around the center and the museum to create their looks. They have $300 and two days to complete their outfits.

Season 7 (January 2010 - April 2010)

Season 7 of Project Runway premieres with sixteen new designers, who will try to make their way to Bryant Park to show their collections at Fashion Week. The contestants are asked to create a garment that represents who they are as a designer. They must choose five fabrics from a wide selection provided by Mood and have one day to complete their look.
2. The Fashion Farm(43 min)

The designers must create a party look from a burlap potato sack for their model/clients. They are given the raw materials and have one day to complete the challenge.
3. The Hi's and Lows of Fashion(43 min)

After being taken to the Metropolitan Museum of Art for inspiration from famous designers, the contestants are then divided into teams of two. The challenge is to create a high-end signature look worthy of a master collection. They have $500 and two days to complete their looks. The next day, they are given the additional task of creating a second "look for less," using only 10% of the budget for the first garment and inspired by the look being crafted by another team.
4. Design Your Heart Out(43 min)

The designers are asked to design a look for a Fashion Week gala featuring the color red and elements of Campbell's Soup branding. They have $100 and one day to finish the design. Lisa Walker - VP of Innovation, Campbell's Soup.

The designers must create a look to be worn by Heidi Klum on the cover of Marie Claire magazine. They have $150 and one day to complete the challenge.
6. A Little Bit of Fashion(43 min)
Aired: 18-02-2010
The designers must design an outfit for a child model. They have $50 and one day to complete their looks. The next morning, Tim gives them the additional task of designing a companion outfit for their adult models. They are given an additional $100 and one more day to complete the challenge.
7. Hard Wear(43 min)
Aired: 04-03-2010
The designers get the task of creating an unconventional, innovative look and a matching accessory from materials found at a hardware store. They have $150 and one day to complete the challenge.
8. The Elements of Fashion(43 min)

The designers are asked to create a look inspired by one of the four classical elements (Earth, Water, Air, and Fire). They have $150 and one day to complete their garments.
9. Takin' It to the Streets(43 min)
Aired: 18-03-2010
Working in teams of two, the designers must create a day look and an evening look after finding inspiration in iconic neighborhoods of New York (Harlem, Upper East Side, Chinatown, and East Village). They have $300 and one day to complete the challenge.
10. Hey, That's My Fabric(43 min)

The designers must create their looks with their own digitally-printed fabric that they create themselves. They have $100 for additional materials and two days to complete their garments.
11. Sew Much Pressure(43 min)

The contestants must craft a red carpet design for Heidi Klum. They have $300 and one day to complete their looks.
12. The Big, Top Designers(43 min)

The designers are asked to create a high-end look inspired by the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus. They have $300 and two days to complete their outfits.

In teams of two, the designers are tasked to create a fashionable resort-wear look. However, they must make the outfit using their partner's design and fabric. They have $150 and one day to complete the challenge.
